Rethymno to Chania Beach Xrysi Akti

by Judy
(Sweden)

Two girls who will be staying in Rethymnon, wondering how to take the bus to Chania and then to the beach Xrysi Akti. How much will it cost?

Rethymnon to Golden Beach, Crete

Hi Judy,

Xrysi Akti or Chrissi Akti or Golden Beach is 2.5 km west of Chania town on the north coast of Crete. This beach is 62 km from Rethymnon town.

Sure, it is easy to get the local buses to do this trip. The bus leaves Rethymnon many times a day to Chania and very often for the return trip also, from at least 5 in the morning until late at night. So this section is easy. The bus station in Rethymnon is at Emmanouil Kefalogianni Street near the closet corner Street of Sifi Vlastou, just to the west of the old town, near the water.

The bus will arrive into the main town bus station in Chania town which is on the corner of Kidonias Street and Kalaidi Street opposite 1866 Square. The duration of the trip from Rethymnon town to Chania town is about one hour and cost is around €6.20.

From that same bus station you can take the local blue bus the further distance to Golden Beach. Take the local blue bus or Chania Bus 15 with display name DARATSO GALATA KALAMAKI. This trip to Golden Beach should be less than ten minutes – just ask the driver to tell you when to get off. This ticket is in Zone A which is €1.10. Get your ticket in the bus station or at a kiosk before you get on the bus.

You can have lunch at the delicious taverna 'To Steki Tou Stavrou'.

In Rethymnon we suggest staying within the walls of the old town to soak up the historic atmosphere. Here you will be close to the points of interest such as the Fortezza, the Rimondi Fountain, the Neratze Mosque, the Venetian Loggia and Archaeological Museum. You can visit the tiny old harbour ringed with tavernas or walk around the harbour and see the lighthouse, around to the beach esplanade with wide open beach and restaurants and cafes all along the way.

A good budget stay is Aphrodite Hotel, or try the Makri Steno Pension. If all else fails, and you cannot afford to stay within the old town walls, try the Palm Beach Apartments which are good value on Rethymnon Beach just a 10 minute walk from the old town.
