Vegera Taverna in Zaros, Crete

At Taverna Vegera in Zaros Village, our friend Vivi says...

We opened our grandmothers' secret hiding places and took their recipes.

By combining our experience, imagination and good feelings we have created the ideal place in Zaros for you to try and savour original Cretan recipes.

Vegera was one of the first six restaurants which joined the network "Tastes of Psiloriti" in 2002. Restaurants which promote and take advantage of the Cretan diet.

Our health is directly related to our diet and by taking the opportunity to eat in the Cretan way we can help ourselves to a healthier life.

Jun 26, 2009, How to Get to Santorini from Crete

Chania Limani at night, Crete
Getting from Crete to Santorini is easy. In summer, there are magical new ferries that can whizz you there in under two hours, and jet aircraft to take you there in half an hour.

Santorini is known as Thira, so look for this name when checking timetables and booking your trip...

Walk With Donkeys

Walk with Donkeys, Donkey Farm and riding, treks and camping, Ierapetra, Crete

Donkeys are work animals for most people on Crete. When they are no longer useful or too old, in the past they were left to starve or die a sad and lonely death. Crazy foreigners think this is terrible, so have created a donkey shelter in the south-east of the island, near Ierapetra.

The great thing about this is that the donkeys get treated really well, live out their lives in good health, and get to meet more crazy foreigners who love animals. Some visitors even bring their kids for a farm visit, a picnic, a day trip riding a donkey, a camping trip or a vulture spotting trek in the mountains, to get away from it all.

Donations can be made to support the work of Alistair and Suzanne at www.walkwithdonkeys.com

To find out more about their wonderful farm visits and guided walks, visit www.walkwithdonkeys.com

Jun 24, 2009, UK Mirror Chooses Loutro in its top 10 guide to Greece's best unspoilt islands and undeveloped villages

"The only way into Loutro in southwest Crete is on foot by winding cliff paths or by ferry from larger Chora Sfakia or Agia Roumeli during the summer. The whitewashed village is at the foot of a steep mountain with a thigh-burning, 600metre climb to the summit and the Anapolis plateau.

Although small and tucked away, Loutro has been a rest stop for tired travellers for hundreds of years - legend has it that even St Paul sheltered in the bay. Several local fishermen have boats for hire to explore the coast, or you can visit the nudist Sweetwater beach... if you dare. The best time to visit is spring or autumn when Crete isn't so hot for hiking.

Holiday Info: Stay at the Hotel Porto Loutro - an 18-room hotel on the beach with a bar and sun terrace".

Chania Limani at night, Crete

Taso Says

One of my favourite things is looking at the reflection of taverna lights on the limani at night. Especially in Chania it evokes a senses of innocence and vulnerability.

The lights reflect the Greeks' desire to gather with friends.
