Quick 3 Nights 4 Days in Crete

by Angela
(Sydney Australia)

Hello! Your site is so very helpful!!

I fly into Heraklion and am trying to decide where it would be best to stay. I arrive at 5pm and depart 4 days later at 4pm. Below are some of my points of interest. I would rather take public transportation.

I am thinking it would be best to travel to Chania right when I land and do the Samaria Gorge the next day and then Elafonissi Beach the following and head to Heraklion that night and then have the morning in Heraklion to see the Palace of Knossos.

I'd like to include Zeus' cave but I just think that is too far away. Any advice is appreciated!!

Yiasas Angela,

Yes all this is possible in this short timeframe if you follow the plan below.
This is only possible if you take an organised day tour to walk the Samaria Gorge.
But the rest you can do independently.

Day 1
Arrive Heraklion 5pm
Local bus to Chania
Stay in Chania
Stay in the Old Town
How about Madonna Studios? Pension Eva or Alcanea Hotel?

Day 2
All day tour – walk the Samaria Gorge
Stay in Chania
Stay in the Old Town
How about Madonna Studios? Pension Eva or Alcanea Hotel?

Day 3
Local bus to Elafonisi Beach for the day
Stay in Chania
Stay in the Old Town
How about Madonna Studios? Pension Eva or Alcanea Hotel?

Day 4
Early departure
Bus to Rethymnon
Leave luggage in bus station, quick walk around town
Bus to Heraklion
Leave luggage in bus station
Bus to Knossos (20 mins 5km) – allow 2 hours for visit
Bus back to town
Walk around town, have lunch, visit museum if time
4pm depart

See our relevant pages on Chania, Samaria, Elafonisi, Rethymnon and Knossos to help you make your plans complete.

Zeus Cave is remote and the way to reach it is by hire car or with an eco tour guide. If you added one extra day you could do this from Heraklion.

See our page on Zeus Cave.
