Why I love Crete

by Traveller
(England )

I just returned from my first trip to Crete. It is a beautiful island. There is so much to do, from exploring the gorges and beautiful beaches, to seeing the history and shopping in Chania.

The island's landscape is beautiful. We went into the mountains one day and saw Kri Kri goats. Also really enjoyed a trip to Elafonisi, which is the most beautiful beach I have ever been to.

The food was amazing and the people are so hospitable. I liked the fact the food was local and really healthy. What I love about Crete is the fact that it is so big and diverse and there is still so much to do. Next time I would like to explore the other end of the island.

First Holiday in Crete

Hi Traveller,

We are so glad you love Crete too and had a good first visit to Crete. Thank you for telling us about your love for Crete, because that is why we made this website – to share our love and your love for this beautiful island.

Yes, Chania is in the west of the island – it is the name of both a region and its capital town.

Two of the most beautiful gorges in that region are Agia Irini Gorge and Samaria Gorge.

Agia Irini Gorge - 43 km from Chania town – a 7 km walk

Samaria Gorge Info - 70 km from Chania town – a 16 km walk

Samaria Gorge is in the national park of the same name, which was established to protect the unique ecology present in that location, which includes the Kri Kri goats. The rocky mountainous terrain of Crete is ideally suited to these nimble little rock jumpers...

The mountains of Crete are really what gives the island her character, a large island 260 x 60 km, with two extensive mountain ranges, there is a lot to explore in the hinterland behind the beaches.

Elafonisi Beach sits at the south-western tip of Crete, it is an undeveloped paradise of turquoise waters and white sands...

The fresh organic local produce creates really healthy food, in fact the Mediterranean diet, and the Cretan diet, that is a general way of eating, (not a weight loss diet), is famous for being one of the healthiest in the world. This is in no small way what makes it so enjoyable to eat out in Crete! Flavour is not compromised of course, nor variety.

Yes, the island is big and diverse and there is so much to see, we usually ask visitors to decide which side of the island to visit – east or west – if they haven’t got much time. We have prepared two mini guides that show an independent route through the back roads for each side of the island. Of course these can be done together and you could explore the whole island if you had enough time...

We hope you do come back and enjoy the east of the island on your next visit:

Lasithi Region in the east of Crete...

Kalo Taxidi! Bon Voyage!
