Where should we stay in Crete?

by Joan A
(Chicago, IL USA)

Hello,

My two sisters and I are coming to Crete for the first time on August 1st though August 8th. We don't know where we are staying yet, but prefer to stay in 1 place and take day trips from there. We will be renting a car.

Originally we were thinking of renting a house/villa, but are open to other ideas since our earlier booking fell through. A few things to mention: We are in our 40's/50's, so a crowded, party scene is not what we are after. Would love to have 3 separate bedrooms, but 2 bedrooms might suffice.

We would like a pool, a/c, kitchenette, and a quieter ambience. We like to hike and enjoy nature, go to markets, swim, see historical sites and museums, and of course, eat.

We were thinking of Rethymnon because it is more centrally located, and then we can travel to Chania, etc.., but it is not essential that we stay in that particular prefecture.

Also, I've heard that it is very windy at this time in certain areas. Which beaches/areas are the windiest during early August? I prefer a sandy beach over a pebble one any day, but should any locations be completely avoided due to Meltemia? In addition to avoiding super windy beaches, we don't want our housing in a super windy area either.

Any direction/ideas you can give us are very much appreciated.

Accommodation in Central Crete

Yiasas Joan,

We think Rethymnon would be perfect for you, or a little seaside village close to Rethymnon.

Inside the old walls of Rethymnon town would be a great atmosphere and if you have hired a car this is beautifully central to the whole of Crete. You could take drives and hikes and visit different beaches, mountains and gorges from there.

However due to the historic centre you won't really find expansive space or a large pool.

So we will suggest two accommodations in Rethymnon town and two in a village in Rethymnon prefecture and ask you to please choose.

Rethymnon Old Town – Avli Apartments

Rethymnon Old Town – Palazzino di Corina

Rethymnon country – Myrtia Villa near to beach and village

Rethymnon seaside village - Captains House Traditional Apartments in Panormos next to beach

August is the most beautiful and hot month of the year with best conditions for the beach. Sometimes the meltemi is strong and it is from N NW. To ensure it does not ruin your holiday you could stay in the south, but only if you are worried.

Plakias is a good choice for this as it is accessible and central. We suggest Plakias Suites or Thalassa House Apartments
