Paleochora Chania to Sitia Lasithi

by Langlois
(Palaiseau, France)

Hello,

This is our first time and small time, I am trying to make a little tour rather than coming back North where we would have already spent time.

Here are the steps we have already booked for August:

Flight booked for Aug 2nd
Georgioupolis 5 nights
Chania 4 nights

Then we still need to book:
Paleochora 5 nights
Sitia 5 nights
Heraklion 1 night
Back home booked for Aug 22nd

We could spend one night on the road from Paleochora to Sitia in order to visit a little the South Coast and Lassithi, of course then reduce by one night expected remaining booking. I am not sure if we could use the boat , we have a car that needs to be also considered.

Thank you for your kind advice.

Paleochora to Sitia and Accommodation Crete

Yiasas Langlois,

What a wonderful long visit to Crete you have planned. With a car your plans will be possible, with some driving between different locations, then many days of rest in one place, with plenty of time to explore that region. With this plan you will see both west and east of the island.

To get from Paleochora to Sitia with a car along the south coast is very difficult. There are roads for some of the way, but nor for the Chania section.

Without a car, you would take the ferry from Paleochora to Sfakia. But then you would need the car again at Sfakia (also known as Chora Sfakion)

Getting Around in Crete

Ferries South Coast

Chora Sfakion

Then from Sfakia with a car to Plakias, then to Agia Galini, then Timbaki and along the south coast to Ierapetra, then to Sitia. This is a long route and would take more than one day or one night’s stop and you could do this – it would be an adventure!

The simpler option would be to break your journey at Agia Galini or Matala and drive via the following route:

Paleochora to Chania to Rethymnon to Spili to Agia Galini - 182 km - allow 4-5 hours driving time (stay overnight) then Agia Galini to Mires to Agioi Deka to Myrtos to Ierapetra then north to Pachia Ammos and East to Sitia - 190 km - allow 4-5 hours driving time.

Your Trip

Your whole itinerary might then look something like this...

Arrive 2 Aug
Georgioupolis 5 nights
Chania 4 nights
Paleochora 5 nights
Drive from Paleochora to Agia Galini
Stay 1 night
Drive from Agia Galini to Sitia
Sitia 5 nights
Depart 22 Aug

You may wish to have a night in Heraklion prior to departure, in which case you may need to stay in Sitia for 4 nights only.

Accommodation

In Chania we suggest Madonna Studios which is reasonably priced and located in the charming old town.

In Paleochora we suggest the Aris Hotel because it is small, with a good position in the town, and run by a local family.

In Agia Galini try the small family-run Hotel Idi with views over the little harbour.

In Sitia we suggest the Sitia Beach Resort because it has a good location near the beach.

In Heraklion we suggest the Hotel Lato because it is handy to the port and airport; very stylish with good service.
