A good place to find a wide range of excellent maps is Taxidiotiko Bibliopolio ~ Travel Bookstore on Handakos 29 in Iraklion (just walk down between the trees from the Liondaria). You can find road maps, walking maps and hiking maps with good detail. Here is also a good map of Iraklion town.

Below we provide links to purchase some excellent maps of Crete, if you would like to arrive prepared to the island. Both the Nelles and Sunflower guides provide good detail on their maps, and are useful for touring, walking or trekking.

Crete Map - Nelles Map and Guide Nelles Maps are widely considered the best travel maps available. Nelles Guides are popular for their extensive color and in-depth travel and cultural information. Now the two elements have been joined together in Nelles Travel Packs. The perfect travel companions both in the planning stage and on the road, they combine a 96-page guidebook with an oversized foldout map, both packaged in a durable waterproof vinyl album.

Crete Map - Sunflower Guide – Western Crete Pocket-sized and in full colour, this guide describes eight car tours in western Crete, highlighting places where you can stop for a walk or just a stroll to a lovely picnic setting. There are accompanying fold-out touring maps covering the whole of the island. But the major part of the book is devoted to 31 main walks and their many variations, all illustrated with large-scale topographical maps (1:50,000). Mountains rearing straight up from the sea, deep wooded gorges, ravines and valleys and yet more glorious mountains, standing proud and acting as a magnet to the eye and the imagination - that's western Crete, or real Crete, as some would say.Its strong, dramatic scenery and colours create sweeping landscapes of this harsh but beautiful countryside that has been the backdrop for heroic deeds, ancient civilisations and constant intrigue for thousands of years, and the home of obdurate, tough people made so by their labours on the land and their experiences. Western Crete is real hikers' territory, and this book, the first-ever walking guide to Crete, in print for decades, describes all the best routes. Also included are plans of Hania and Rethimnon and bus timetables (most of the walks are accessible by bus). A unique on-line update service keeps readers abreast of all route changes since publication, and GPS tracks can be downloaded for many of the walking routes.

Crete Map - Sunflower Guide - Eastern Crete A car-touring and walking guide to the region of eastern Crete. There are topographical walking maps and a fold-out touring map covering the whole of Crete, showing the location of all the walks in the book. Many short walks for motorists are suggested, along with recommendations of areas for picnics, and there are details of the popular excursion to the Samaria Gorge in western Crete. All the walks and tours have been revised for this second edition. Jonnie Godfrey worked on Crete for several years and, as a travel PR on her return to England, has taken many press groups to the island. Elizabeth Karslake, a photographer, joined Jonnie to undertake the huge job of mapping out, photographing and describing tours and walks over the whole island; together they produced the first walking guides for Crete.

The E4 European walking path starts in Kastelli-Kissamos and tracks 320 km through some of the most beautiful countryside in Kriti to finally end at Kato Zakros in the east. The trail is not always marked, it has yellow and black E4 markers along the way. It is always good to check with the locals before starting any hike or walk in Kriti.
