Ferries to Crete

Trip Planning

Ferries to Crete from Turkey - many people ask us their holiday questions and we are more than happy to help...

Hi, I'm travelling to Crete next month and I was just wondering if there are any ferries from Kusadasi in Turkey to Crete Greece? If so how much is it and how long is the journey?

Katie, Ireland

Hi Katie, there are no direct ferries from Turkey to Crete Greece but lots of easy connections.

Most Turkish ports have ferry connections with their corresponding Greek port in the Dodecanese.

Then there are many ferries in the Dodecanese to take you south to Rhodes and then there is a ferry direct from Rhodes to Crete.

Alternatively you could go via Santorini. We have put the details below as at Aug 2010.

See below a map of Crete with the ports and airports marked.

The ferry goes every day from Kusadasi to Vathos on the island of Samos - Everyday (Between 01 April and 31 October ). At 08:30 hrs from Kusadasi to Samos. All taxes are included, your visa is not included. An early reservation is essential to ensure there is a place for you especially during the high season. Most of the ferries have only 120 tickets available (2 bus loads). It takes about 1:45 hours. The price is approx 30 Euro one way. Any travel agent by the harbour should be able to assist you to buy tickets.

From Vathy there are daily ferries to Rhodes (9 hours)
From Vathy there are daily ferries to Santorini via Syros (AIGAION PELAGOS company 5.5 hours then HELLENIC SEAWAYS 6.5 Hours)
From Rhodes there are daily ferries to Crete (10-14 Hours)
From Santorini there are daily ferries to Crete 4 hours and in summer fast hydrofoils (2 hours)

Any travel agent near each harbour should be able to sell you tickets for these ferries, but be careful in August because it is peak time they may be booked out.

Here are some good tips for Crete transport: Ferries Info
This might help for the Samos leg: Samos Info

Here is a booking website, but always talk to the locals because the weather can change departure times and in summer there are always extra ferries. Vathi Ferries

Another option is to fly from Samos to Rhodes (Olympic Airways 1 hour) and Rhodes to Crete (Sky Express 1 hour), which would not be as adventurous but much quicker and easier.

Warmest regards from our team here and please keep in touch and tell us what you decide to do, and tell us how your visit to Crete is going, or ask any further questions. Don't forget to get a good Crete travel guide, they will tell you where to buy tickets.
